How Croatia became the “Kingdom of Tourism” thanks to the Game of Thrones
Ever caught yourself daydreaming of taking a stroll around the magical and oh-so-extraordinary streets and pathways of the “King’s Landing”? Well, you’re just one plane ticket away of fulfilling your dreams. Yup, you’ve heard it. Your favourite show’s capital isn’t made in CGI, it is actually a real place, a medieval town Dubrovnik, once a part of the wealthy Republic of Ragusa, highly appreciated for its diplomacy.
Dubrovnik, a Mediterranean vacation city and a seaport is settled in the south of Croatia, on the beautiful coastline of the Adriatic Sea. What made Dubrovnik the perfect choice for HBO’s award winning series “Game of Thrones” are the perfectly preserved surroundings and buildings that surround the Old town of Dubrovnik. If you are a fan of the show or if you are striving to become one, you must have noticed the beautiful red rooftops of the building and houses which are one of Dubrovnik’s trademarks and which are also a part of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Anyways, back to the topic. The HBO’s hit show succeeded in making Dubrovnik one of the top must-see-destinations in the world. Since Dubrovnik was a great tourist attraction even before the debut of the show, the local authorities have decided to “pump” Dubrovnik’s tourist offer even more with adding various tourist tours, such as “Game of Thrones” Walking tour of Dubrovnik, where you can see all the places where this mega popular show was filmed.
It is undutiful that Dubrovnik had a lot to offer by its own, but the popularity of the show made it more famous among the younger generations who now choose Dubrovnik as their first stop on their “bucket lists”. Big thumbs up for the local authorities and the whole Croatian tourist organization who have managed to improve Croatia’s tourism by simply using something as a TV show to attract the masses.
