Top three TV shows portraying the PR business
Need motivation, a different perspective or just a little boost to improve your working skills ? If you already have the knowledge from all the books you read, or lectures you heard but still need some more insight try these PR related TV shows and get inspired :
1)The West Wing
A very successful and award winning show that is set primarily in the West Wing of the White House. It often featured current or recent political issues which is always a plus since being in the pr business you have to be on track with what is going on around you. It also focuses on the importance of communication within the staff and your colleagues. By working as a team, using skill, passion and knowledge you can create a PR campaign and public message that will have amazing results !
2) The Crazy Ones
If you’re into comedy more, try this one starring Robin Williams as Simon Roberts, the head of a successful Chicago advertising agency, often highlights the difference between traditional and modern approaches when it comes to advertising. Public relations and advertising may not be one and the same, but they share enough qualities to make the show relevant for a discussion between you and your fellow PR junkies.
It’s quite possibly the first time a television show focuses on an aspect of public relations beyond the traditional event planners and publicists. This series is not portraying the PR businesses as a typically party full of glamorous tasks that has been pushed in mainstream. The main character Olivia Pope, who’s known as a professional “fixer,” is played by Kerry Washington. Olivia was a White House Communications Director who leaves her position to start her own crisis communications firm. What is great is that it teaches you some of the fundamentals of public relations: importance of research, diversity, relationship building, work ethics and strategic thinking.
